Melitta group (Russian Melitta Group) Is a German company operating in various fields of business, the main activities of which are the production and marketing of branded products in the field of coffee (domestic and professional coffee machines, coffee makers, accessories) and tea, storage and cooking, as well as home cleaning. Melitta Group is an international concern with representative offices in Europe, North and South America, Japan and its head office in Minden (Germany).

The company is headed by a staff of more than 3,000 employees, the grandchildren of the founder - Melitta Benz.

Since 1988, the concern has owned the brands Melitta ("Enjoying Coffee"), Cilia ("Enjoying Tea"), Toppits ("Freshness and Taste"), Swirl ("Easy Cleaning"), etc.

Since 1994, Melitta has been working in Russia; the company has offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

History of creation

In 1908, Melitte Benz, a 35-year-old housewife from Dresden, came up with the idea of how to separate the coffee grounds remaining at the bottom of the mug using a paper filter. She made a hole in the bottom in a brass saucepan and put blotting paper from her eldest son's school notebook there - the first paper filter for coffee was invented. Having received a patent for the invention of the first coffee filter and having 72 German pfennig in her pocket as start-up capital, Melitta Benz and her husband Hugo Benz on December 15 of the same year registered the company M. Bentz »in the register of trading companies in Dresden.

History of the company

The first factory of the company was located in the Benzov apartment in Dresden on an area of 8 m².

At the Leipzig Fair in 1909, Benz already sold 1,200 new filters.

In 1910, at the Dresden Hygiene Exhibition, the company presented a filter apparatus of its own invention, which aroused great interest. Orders from all over Germany fell on Bentsov, production quickly went uphill.

In 1928, the company moved to Minden, where it is currently located.

Initially, the filters were made of brass, and in the 1920s and 1930s they were made of aluminum and ceramics and decorated. Along with them were used round paper filters. By the beginning of the 40s, the company had conquered the segment of coffee filters and filter paper in Germany and began a systematic expansion to other countries.

Since 1932, the company has a logo. It was improved in 1937 - for the first and last time.

During World War II, Melitta survived the hardest time. But the company survived, and by 1950 sales of coffee accessories rose again - from 0 to 4.7 million German marks.

A modern coffee filter factory was built in Minden in the 1950s. Buyers were given the opportunity to test Melitta products for advertising for four weeks: after this time they had to pay for the sample or return it.

Along with filters, Melitta began to produce coffee makers and coffee machines, sweets and fruit juices, porcelain and even cigars - things that, according to the then head of the company Horst Benz, were components of a “full table”. Released in millions of copies, pastel-colored ceramic cups and Melitta filters are now collectibles.

In addition, the company launched under its brand the production of home accessories - from sponges for washing dishes to

dust collectors. The firms producing these products were acquired and incorporated into the Melitta Group.

Each type of product was supported by its own advertising campaign. So, in 1960, during an advertising campaign for professional coffee machines, visitors to German cafes received about two million cups of coffee for free.

Since 1962, Melitta began to offer customers the coffee itself - already ground and in vacuum packaging. Initially, the production was located in Minden, and after the acquisition of the coffee brewing factory in Bremen (in 1966) and coffee plantations in Brazil, the company became the largest European coffee producer.

By the end of the 70s, the Melitta Group provided 10 thousand jobs and global sales of more than 1.6 billion German marks.

The period of rampant growth quickly ended, as the company quickly achieved global success. Now the company’s strategy has focused on its best and most professional achievements. A wide range has been reduced, unprofitable and unpromising positions withdrawn.
