Curtains for a small room: the right techniques in the design of small rooms

The interior design of the bedroom will be incomplete if you do not pay decent attention to such an important issue as the design of the window. The problem of choosing curtains for many continues to be relevant. Indeed, it is this accessory that can visually expand the space or make it smaller, add sunlight or darkness and darkness.

Features of choice

Choosing curtains for a small bedroom is not a difficult task, but there are certain rules that limit your choice.

Rules for choosing curtains:

  • For a small room, choose a plain curtain without motley ornament or other image.
  • It’s better not to fold the curtains, which will visually reduce the room,
  • The only suitable pattern is horizontal stripes.
  • When choosing curtains in a small bedroom, designers advise using tight weave textiles, light-tight and creating coziness in a small bedroom,

  • hang a long curtain rod on a narrow window, then the opening will seem larger
  • if two windows are located on the same wall the cornice should be chosen the length of the entire wall,
  • set of curtains should be simple with a minimum of folds
  • the bedroom will be brighter if used blinds with transparent curtains. Roman or roll constructions are also suitable.
  • Perfect option - easy draping tulle.

When making a window in a small bedroom, you should be very careful about the choice of textiles for curtains. It must match specific criteria:

  • plain fabrics, without print, pattern or ornament. Any image will attract attention by focusing on the window, but this should not be allowed,
  • simple forms. Complex draperies are voluminous and, as a rule, they absorb space,
  • visually expand the narrow and long room horizontal stripe fabric as a picture.
  • In a small room with low ceilings, the right choice would be ceiling cornice.
  • With a plain design of the walls of a small bedroom choose curtains from bright textile,
  • Plain curtains suitable if wallpaper on the walls with a picture,
  • White curtains always look solemn, they will help create a feeling of spaciousness in a small bedroom.

Some taboo for curtains of a small bedroom:

  • textiles with large ornaments or other patterns - he will draw all attention to himself, taking all the free space,
  • draperies and folds on curtains small windows will make it even smaller, similarly you can not use lambrequins, as well as other complex curtains that visually reduce the room.

You can apply ready-made design solutions and properly decorate the window opening in a small bedroom. A narrow window will widen a long baguette from one wall to another.

If you decide to equip a small bedroom with suspended ceilings, the cornice will very conveniently hide in a niche behind the ceiling frame, then the fabrics will effectively fall straight from the ceiling.

Color schemes

Color has a great influence on the formation of space. Window design in a small bedroom should not be out of the general color scheme. Furniture changes a little less often than wallpaper, so it is precisely its shades that you should consider when choosing the color of curtains. This will save you money.

Bright white curtains of different colors are suitable for the white bedroom: green, yellow, orange.

  • If the walls of your bedroom are in saturated colors, the choice should be stopped on curtains of light tones, ideally - white for a pink interior.
  • Huge popularity in all shades of beige and brown, they are extremely appropriate in the bedroom, soothe and create the impression of comfort.

How to choose the right curtains in a small room - the main points

To visually increase the space of a small room, the following methods are used:

  • The choice of light colors that make the interior light and comfortable. For openings facing north, choose warm colors (beige, pinkish, peach), for southern windows - cold (grayish, blue, green). To revitalize the interior, the curtains are decorated with small bright accents corresponding to individual interior items. As such color accents can be laconic pickups and other decorative elements - brushes, ruffles.
  • Color matching curtains with other elements of the interior - upholstery of upholstered furniture, other interior textiles, carpet. It is recommended that the curtains be 1-2 tones lighter or darker than the wallpaper.
  • Using simple design models. Sophisticated solutions can only be applied to light translucent and transparent curtains.

What pattern on the curtains increases the space in a small room?

Plain fabrics that can be smooth or textured are optimal. The texture should not be too shiny, nor heavy, fleecy. In small, but high rooms, materials with a dim and not wide horizontal strip can be used, which will visually expand the space. A thin and often located strip will cause unpleasant ripples in the eyes.

What curtains are better not to use for window decoration in a small apartment

  • Heavy curtains of complex design, especially made in dark colors. Avoid a large number of folds on the curtain. Any excess volume, layer, shuttlecock takes the area of the room.
  • Ceiling to floor models. The exception is rooms with panoramic windows on which you can use sliding Japanese panels or curtains on the floor. In the second version, the cornices must be selected so that the edges of the curtains in an extended form border the side walls.
  • Lambrequins. In our case, these decorative elements are better not to use, since they make the wall heavier and visually hide the space.
  • Bright colorful fabrics, canvases with a large pattern. They attract attention by visually reducing the volume of the room to the size of a window opening.
  • Fabrics with a vertical strip. They will make the room taller, but narrower. Therefore, for a small room - this is an unfortunate option. Valid diagonal strip.

Classic curtain and curtain couple

Curtains and curtains are chosen in bright colors, matching each other. A light curtain can be gathered a little, because it does not take up much space. In small rooms of "Khrushchev", if there is no need to darken the space, only transparent curtains can be hung.

Blackout role curtains

In a bedroom, unlike a drawing room, it is necessary to create the maximum blackout. For this purpose, you can install a roller blind with blackout fabric, which can hold up to 98% of daylight or street artificial light.
But do not think that the effect of blackout is provided only by dark materials. This fabric is woven from three threads forming three layers. The middle one is black (light-holding), the outer one is light (reflective), and the room facing it can be any one - light, dark, plain or with a pattern.
Roller blinds are combined with transparent curtains, which in the closed state provide easy light retention.

Roman curtains

This is a good choice for both the living room and the bedroom. You can choose the traditional "Romans" with rigid horizontal inserts, forming when lifting smooth horizontal folds. And you can buy or sew curtains without transverse liners that form soft tails when opening the opening. Roman models go well with transparent voiles.

Roller blinds "day-night"

Role-curtains “day-night” are a two-layer lifting structure. Her cloth is alternating dark and light stripes, thermally bonded to each other. Such models allow you to smoothly adjust the illumination by moving light and dark stripes relative to each other.

Role-curtains can be mounted on the wall, in the opening, to the ceiling. Compact models are designed for use on plastic windows. They are fixed directly to the sash - on self-tapping screws or without drilling using special brackets or double-sided tape. Mini-curtains mounted on the sash leave the window sill free, which is important for gardeners.

Curtains for a small studio apartment

Studio apartment is a type of housing popular among modern youth. Such apartments usually have large windows. For their design, traditional couples “curtain curtains” or Japanese panels are used.

In the living room and bedroom areas, the curtains go down to the floor, and in the kitchen area - to or just below the windowsill. Cornices on all window openings should be on the same level.

If windows do not constitute a single composition, then for zones of different functionality, you can choose different curtains. For the kitchen, curtains are suitable for the color of the apron, countertops or in a neutral style.

A small room is a vast field for finding the most successful solutions for window decoration. The right choice of curtains will provide not only a visual expansion of the space, but also convenient control of the illumination of the room.

Basic selection rules

Do not neglect the free space for the sake of excessive decorativeness: proportionality and organicity are the main requirements when choosing design elements.

Interior designers advise choosing curtains in a small bedroom, given the following points:

  1. give preference to plain materials without drawings and light colors,
  2. if you still like two-color and three-color materials for curtains, it is recommended to choose patterns with horizontal lines or in wide stripes,
  3. the fabric should be very dense, not to let in light,
  4. Do not overload the curtains with an abundance of folds, making the room visually smaller
  5. hang a long curtain rail from wall to wall over the window opening, even if there are two of them in the room,
  6. to hang rolled designs or blinds.

Minor details can ruin a carefully selected design, overload a small room or make it uncomfortable. Excessive decorative effect can cause discomfort.

It is not recommended to design curtains in a small bedroom:

  1. with a large complex ornament - he visually fills everything around and focuses on himself,
  2. draperies and folds - such elements look impressive, but are too cluttered, making the room visually smaller,
  3. multilayer structures - absorb lighting, block and fill the free space, instead of comfort, create the impression of a fenced off and congested.

Even under such conditions, you can choose the appropriate design method, which will be to your taste, color and style.

We refuse from a lambrequin

In large spacious rooms with high ceilings, curtains with lambrequins will be appropriate, and even some kind of heaviness will play into their hands, since there is enough room in the room. But, you yourself already understood that in a small room such a design of curtains with a heavy top would press the window and pull it down, and after it the ceiling would seem even lower.

Visually raise the ceiling

Curtains will help us in this matter, as well as possible, if they are fixed correctly. After all, a decorative cornice mounted on the wall below the ceiling, leaves a gap between the curtains and the ceiling, which visually lowers it even lower.

It’s necessary to get rid of this gap, and the ceiling cornice, which is mounted on the ceiling itself, will help in this, providing a clear line of curtains extending from the ceiling to the floor. And since it is practically invisible, it creates the illusion of soaring curtains and space in the room.

But that is not all.

The main thing, in this case, is to make the curtain line strictly vertical, which will make it possible to visually raise the ceiling even more, which we will talk about later.

We choose curtains with the correct folds

In the case of a small space, curtains that are draped in small assemblies are not suitable, as a result of which the clear vertical line to which we strive does not form.

It is better to make a choice in the direction of curtains that fall in large folds, or are laid on top of the curtains in deep large folds, as a result of which an expressive vertical is formed.

Choosing the right curtain length

It would seem that the length of the curtains can not have a significant impact in creating the vertical, but this is not so.

Very long curtains lying on the floor form a broken fold, which negates all our efforts to create a vertical (photo on the left), and short curtains not only exclude the presence of a vertical, but also visually break up the wall with a window (photo on the right).

The only exception is Roman curtains, and even then, when they are supplemented with fabric curtains, framing the window on both sides.

And the floor-length curtains will be an ideal option for a small room - they create the vertical we need.

Refuse curtains with a bright large print

Such curtains look great in spacious rooms, always attracting attention, but in small rooms they "steal" a space, which is already not enough.

Plain curtains or with an inexpressive small print will be an ideal option for small rooms, but ... and here there are subtleties.

Firstly, it is worth giving preference to soft, plastic fabrics that easily fall in folds, forming verticals.

Secondly, we must choose textiles that do not absorb, but, on the contrary, reflect light - and these are fabrics such as satin, glossy velvet or viscose.

Choose the right color for the curtains

Choosing the color of curtains for small rooms, it is necessary to exclude options contrasting the color of the walls. It is necessary to give preference to curtains in the same tonality as the walls, or 2-3 tones lighter.

This approach will make it possible for curtains to dissolve in space, or become invisible, erasing the boundaries between the walls and the ceiling, and thereby visually expand the room.

Given all these recommendations, you can create such a window design that not only visually enlarges a small room, but also makes its interior more harmonious and attractive.
