The decoration in the kitchen is subject to increased requirements. Moisture and temperature changes, steam and fat evaporation, dyes and soot - all this is always present in the kitchen and always affects the material of the walls, ceiling and furniture.
Do-it-yourself plastic ceiling in the kitchen is almost the easiest and most affordable way to provide an attractive appearance to the room and at the same time not to repair the finish every six months.
Ceiling panels for the kitchen
In practice, there are 2 types of finishing material.
- Expanded polystyrene plates - as a rule, have a size of 50 * 50 cm, are very light and very decorative. The surface of the tile is always made embossed with a complex pattern, which, in fact, is its main attraction. Laminated material is selected for the kitchen, since it can be cleaned with a damp sponge, and cleaning in the kitchen is always a hot issue.
- The panel ceiling in the kitchen in the more usual sense is assembled from polyvinyl chloride lamellas of different thicknesses. It may resemble a lining or form an almost even seamless surface. This option, without a doubt, is washable, and is resistant to rather aggressive household cleaners.
There are lamellas for the wall - more rigid and with a greater thickness, and for the ceiling - 0.5-1 cm thick. The latter require accuracy when installing or repairing. This option is implemented much more often, as it differs in variety and affordable price.
The plastic panel can be fixed to the surface directly if the ceiling is even, but can be installed on a suspended frame. Alternatively, a rack structure can be used where plastic panels are not mounted.
Advantages and disadvantages of PVC panels
The material has a lot of advantages and is perfect for finishing a kitchen.
- Speed and ease of installation: you can build a suspension structure literally in a day with your own hands.
- The material is moisture resistant, and is insensitive to both direct contact with water and the action of steam.
- Plastic is very easy to clean from soot or grease. The only material that can suffer is dyes, but this is unlikely.
- The panels do not rot, are not susceptible to mold and are not deformed by dampness.
- The finish is lightweight, so that the load on the base surface does not amount to.
- The appearance of the plastic is extremely diverse: it can imitate any natural material, reproduce any shades and patterns, and even have a different texture right down to the mirror.
- Affordable cost in strength even with the most modest repair budget.
The disadvantages of the product are as follows.
- Flammability - alas, plastic (even self-extinguishing) in the presence of fire burns and melts.
- The material is deformed at a relatively low temperature - 100–120 C.
- The finish is steamproof, so you should take care of additional ventilation.
Panel Views
Of course, the decorative possibilities of the ceilings in the kitchen made of plastic are lower than, for example, the stretch ones, but here there are plenty of possibilities.
Product Shape:
- tile type panels - 0.3–0.98 m. Their surface is not embossed, but it is quite capable of reproducing decorative patterned tiles,
- rack panel (lamella). The width varies from 0.13 to 0.3 m, and the length is 0.9 to 3 m. The so-called ceiling from the siding in the kitchen is collected from lamellas,
- sheet panel - It differs in the largest dimensions: width - 0.5–1.22 m, length - 0.98– 2.44 m. Do-it-yourself installation is difficult to do, because with large sizes the product is quite fragile.
When installed, the lamellas are joined together. In this case, different types of surface can be formed:
- seamless lamellas when laying, they form a smooth surface on which the docking points are almost invisible. This option is popular when decorating the ceiling "under the stone",
- rusty - beveled when connected form a decorative recess. Here, the seams are part of the design,
- embossed models - most often they imitate the same lining. An overly complex terrain cannot be obtained. The strength and durability of such a material is much higher, however, it has a corresponding cost.
The color range of plastic is not limited, however, plastic ceilings in the kitchen must be selected in accordance with the interior. In fairness, white or even pastel color is far from being as popular as in former times. The ceiling surface with a complex pattern allows you to get special lamellas.
They are made in two ways:
- thermal film - an ornament or pattern of natural material is applied to a film that is glued to plastic under pressure. The option is affordable, but does not differ in durability,
- Direct printing requires special equipment, but a kitchen ceiling of this kind is not only beautiful, but will also last much longer. The technology allows us to solve the issue of decorative material is not trivial: on the ceiling of plastic panels in the kitchen, photos from the archive can be applied to their surface, and you can get an exclusive image.
The surface of the lamellas can also be different:
- matte - with a low coefficient of light reflection. Suitable for most interiors,
- glossy - luster provides a varnish covering. For a ceiling made of PVC panels in the kitchen, it is better to choose glossy ones, since they look more elegant, more practical: they have better water resistance. How to wash them - no questions arise: both plain water, soapy water, and any detergents that do not include abrasive particles are suitable.
Materials and Tools
To finish the kitchen ceiling with PVC panels you will need:
- the actual finish - the number of lamellas is determined by dividing the surface area by the area of the plank. In this case, it is worth considering not only the width, but also the way of laying. For a seamless option, this does not matter, but when laying rusty - yes,
- frame material - In the kitchen, a metal frame is preferable, since the tree is not as resistant to moisture as galvanized steel. For the construction of the suspension system, a guide profile is required - it is mounted around the perimeter of the room, and the ceiling - forms a frame. Here you need a plan: looking at the drawing, it’s easier to take into account all the features of the room and correctly calculate the number of profiles,
- fasteners - determined by the nature of the base ceiling surface: usually it’s concrete, so you’ll need a self-tapping screw or dowel for concrete,
- skirting board - overlaps the junction of the finish with the wall.
In addition, such tools are needed:
- screwdriver - for fixing the frame,
- scissors for metal and a knife for plastic,
- pliers, hammer,
- level, tape measure, square.
How to make a ceiling in the kitchen
To begin with, the old finish is removed from the base ceiling surface: paint, whitewash, wallpaper. If the plaster is old and begins to crumble, it is worth completely freeing the ceiling from it. There is no need to plaster again, but it is necessary to prime with an antiseptic primer.
If there are traces of rust on the surface from leaks, or mold, the plaster will have to be completely removed, and in some cases, part of the concrete should be removed.
- The future ceiling must be exactly horizontal to the floor, so the distance to it is laid off from the floor. To do this, choose the lowest angle, note the level of the frame, then exactly the same distance is laid in other angles. A mark on the wall is made using the chocline, or using a cord run in blue.
- A guide profile is fixed along the marked line to the wall with screws or dowels.
- On the ceiling mark the location of the ceiling profile. The pitch between the rails is usually 60 cm. However, when laying ceiling sheets, the distance is determined depending on their size.
- The ceiling profile is fixed to the ceiling using rigid U-shaped fasteners. The step between them should not be more than 70 cm. The suspensions are installed first on the ceiling surface, and then the ceiling profile is fixed, being guided by the marked lines.
Be sure to install each element is accompanied by a check for vertical and horizontal. This is necessary so that the installed ceiling remains parallel to the floor.
- At this stage, all the necessary wiring and communications are installed, which must be hidden by lamellas.
- A starting strip is mounted around the perimeter below the guide profile. The lamels are cut so that their length is 0.5 cm less than the distance between the walls.
- The ceiling in the kitchen from plastic panels is collected from the window, since this area is most illuminated. The lamella is inserted into the starting bar and fastened to the profile with self-tapping screws through the protrusion, and not through the main material. The next element is inserted into the groove of the starting bar and inserted into the groove of the previous lamella. The mount is the same.
- The last lamella usually has to be cut in width. First, it is inserted into the starting bar, and then, thanks to the flexibility of the material, to the previous one.
- Around the perimeter is fixed ceiling plinth.
- To install lighting devices in a panel designed for this, a hole is pre-drilled. Also, material is cut in advance in order to round a pipe, duct, protrusion and so on.
Repair of the ceiling in the kitchen with plastic panels is possible without installing a frame. This method is implemented with a flat ceiling surface and in cases where there is no need to hide the communication or install hidden lighting - lighting, built-in lamps. Such work is even simpler: liquid nails are applied to the surface and lamellas are glued alternately. The starting bar in this case is not needed, and the ceiling will be needed.
The ceiling of the panels in the kitchen is a budget, but quite practical and decorative option. It is inferior in the variety of forms to drywall, but thanks to the reproduction of any natural and artificial materials, it is no less interesting.
Types and properties of pvc panels
Externally, the standard panel represents two sheets of plastic interconnected by stiffeners. Due to the "airiness" it is much easier than most of its "brothers."
PVC ceilings can be combined with any interior design.
Important: The more stiffening ribs, the stronger the product. For a panel 3 m long and 0.25 m wide, there should be at least 27-29 of them.
There is a large variety of PVC ceilings.
The variety of products on the market rolls over - hundreds of shades include only the color scheme. Nevertheless, they can be divided according to the following criteria.
- Seamless, where there is no connection of a certain kind. The ends of the panels are adjusted to each other so that on a smooth, even surface, the joints are almost invisible. Seamless plastic ceilings in the kitchen photo fit perfectly into any interior.
- Suture. Connect with grooves and spikes. Mounted panels have a visible joint, reminiscent of a "lining".
Unlike other constructions, PVC ceilings are affordable.
Shape and dimensions:
- Tile panels are available in sizes from 300x300 mm to 100x100 mm, width from 1.5 mm. Indispensable for creating original ceiling compositions with alternating smooth and textured tiles imitating wood and stone. Convenient and easy to install.
- Rack and pinion. Elements vary in length from 900 to 3000 mm, width from 100 to 300 mm, thickness from 4 to 8 mm. Mounted as a "lining".
- Plastic sheet. The large dimensions of the product cover a significant area of the ceiling. They are distinguished by their flexibility and integrity. As a rule, they are mounted on a level surface without a frame. Standard sheet sizes range from 900 to 3,000 mm in length and from 900 to 1,500 mm in width.
Slatted ceiling structures made of PVC panels.
Note! The optimal thickness of the panel ceiling in the kitchen should be at least 7-8 mm. Smaller sizes can cause deflection during installation or after.
- Glossy or matte. Gloss is applied with a layer of varnish after extrusion. Matte surfaces are not further processed.
- Smooth or structured. Today, panels are produced with the texture of natural materials - for example, wood or stone.

Advantages and disadvantages
It is not by chance that PVC panels have gained such popularity. They are characterized by a number of valuable advantages.
- The ceiling in the kitchen made of plastic photo panels always has a modern aesthetic appearance, which is achieved by relatively small means and efforts.
- Plastic is not afraid of water, which at once solves problems with flooding from inaccurately closed taps a floor higher, as well as with mold and fungus, which this material is simply not “over the teeth”.
- It is easy to look after him. For a ceiling made of plastic panels in your kitchen, a rag and soap suds every two to three months are enough.
- Fire resistance is one of the most important properties of polyvinyl chloride, confirmed by numerous studies. For example, in France, PVC items are classified as flammable and non-combustible
- Environmental friendliness. The polymer itself, which has a long service life, does not decompose and does not emit harmful substances. High-quality products must have sanitary certificates that are issued to the consumer upon request.
- Simple installation, accessible even to a person with no experience. On a smooth ceiling, panels are fixed with "liquid nails." For uneven surfaces, a frame (crate) is first mounted on which plastic is attached. It is very convenient if it is necessary to close the pipes and wiring.
- Light weight, which is especially valuable when transporting and delivering cargo to the apartment.
- Availability. The ceiling in the kitchen from inexpensive PVC panels is a completely budgetary event.
- Ample opportunities in the decor. With the help of plastic, you can realize any design project.
PVC does not emit harmful substances, it is an environmentally friendly material.
The list of disadvantages is much more modest:
- The relative fragility of the material due to its hollow structure. Reliable dent prevention - neat installation. When buying, pay attention to the composition: the high content of chalk is a sign of low-quality goods, prone to deformation.
- “Chemical” odor that disappears a few days after installation
- Dark shades may fade in the sun.

Important: When choosing panels for the ceiling in the kitchen, you should definitely conduct a strength test. To do this, click on the surface so that it bends an average of one third and then release. Dents will remain on the low grade product.
Design features
The unique properties of the material provide a diverse design of finished products.
PVC panels are glossy and matte, successfully imitate wood, fabrics, natural stone. Traditional white ceilings replaced the panels of all colors of the rainbow, with patterns, drawings, including those made using the 3D technique.

Glossy or matte
Here is one of the questions that the consumer decides for himself. The difference between them is in a thin layer of varnish on the glossy. Both those and others have the advantages. Gloss visually expand the small kitchen, focus on sophistication. Haze will add coziness and warmth.

Color panels
Provide extensive opportunities for interesting combinations. At the same time, each will be original and emphasize the individuality of the room. It is only necessary to select compatible colors, and also take into account the tonality of the walls and furniture.

Patterns
It can be any: floral, geometric, oriental, marbled. They are used in accordance with the chosen decor style. They look good in a separate segment of the ceiling, especially if they complement the pattern on the wall.

Imitation of natural material
It is carried out by applying to the panel a painted and relief film. You can imitate everything from velvet to amber. Plastic, which is almost indistinguishable from natural stone or wood, looks impressive and presentable.

Plastic without borders
The ceiling of pvc panels in the kitchen design photo shows the limitless possibilities of plastic. It will satisfy the demands of hi-tech fans, organically fit into country music, connect together the disparate details of the eclecticism now fashionable, and create neoclassical multi-level designs. The most ordinary kitchen interior is able to look with it modern and stylish.

Kitchen Ceiling Requirements
The conditions in the kitchen for decoration materials are not simple. High humidity, high temperature, soot and grease stains harm surfaces, including ceiling. Therefore, if there is a question about the repair of the kitchen, then when choosing a ceiling finish you need to be guided by the following principles:
- quality (few people dream of doing repairs in the kitchen every two to three years),
- resistance to absorption of grease and dirt,
- wear resistance
- unpretentiousness in leaving,
- security,
- tolerate moisture well
- ease of installation
- Attractive appearance
- reasonable price.
In construction stores, a huge selection of products is provided, including plastic ceiling panels.
Benefits:
- the widest range of colors and textures, which makes it possible to experiment with the design of the kitchen,
- do not require serious preparatory work with the surface, plastic panels are a great way to hide a problematic, uneven ceiling,
- differ in speed and ease of installation,
- have excellent sound insulation properties,
- practical and attractive - plastic panels on the ceiling are easy to care for, dirt and soot can be washed off without problems. The only limitation is if glossy or mirror panels are preferred for the design of the kitchen ceiling. Then it’s strictly forbidden to use tools that contain abrasive substances,
- excellent moisture resistance - PVC panels can survive even severe flooding without any special consequences for their appearance. Dismantling the ceiling from plastic panels in the kitchen will only be necessary if the neighbors poured several hundred cubic meters of water on top of you. Fortunately, such accidents rarely occur,
- withstand significant temperature changes, while the panel does not deform, the ceiling does not lose aesthetics. Therefore, the ceiling decoration with plastic panels is suitable not only for heated rooms, but for the improvement of the summer kitchen in a private house or in the country,
- indispensable in cases where you want to hide cables or pipes passing through the ceiling,
- perfectly combined with various lighting devices,
- have more than affordable cost.
The only drawback is the loss of ceiling height, as with all suspended ceiling structures. But with the correct design visually it will not be noticeable.
All types of plastic coatings used to decorate the ceiling in the kitchen can be divided into:
- suture
- seamless
- made in the form of tiles,
- leafy.
Suture panels (popularly - lining)
The sutured plastic panels on the ceiling after laying will resemble the clapboard lining. The seams at the joints are clearly visible, but this is done to create a special decor. The coating can be used in any room, it all depends on the taste of the owner, but before you apply it to decorate the kitchen ceiling, it should be understood that dust and grease will clog into the seams, which means that in practical terms they do not win too much.
Seamless ceiling panels
If the choice is stopped on a seamless option, then with proper installation it will very much resemble stretch French ceilings. The joints with this method are visible only with a very close examination, however, a flat surface and its attractive appearance require some skills from the master, so do-it-yourself sheathing the ceiling with seamless panels can be recommended only to those who already have the necessary experience to work with them.

Plastic tile
The well-known plastic ceiling tiles also apply to panels. With its help, you can unique design of the ceiling and at the same time meet a small amount.
Ceiling tiles are sold in different sizes. Most often, this range is in the range of 15-50 sq.cm, but there are other options. Tiles can be either square or rectangular, as well as presented in the more familiar form of lamella, have a different thickness and surface appearance. Wave-shaped plates look very beautiful, but they may not be used for every room. In this matter, we must proceed from the general direction of design.
Sheet plastic panels
Sheet plastic panels are easy to install, but it is clear that they are not very suitable for large areas, although they are simply ideal for creating multi-level ceilings or for decorating them. Today, some manufacturers can make a sheet of plastic of the right size.
The advantages of ceiling panels in the kitchen
The main advantages of the plastic ceiling coating for the kitchen arise from the properties of this material, for example:
- Plastic is a non-hygroscopic material and does not absorb water, the advantage of this in the kitchen is that steam will not be absorbed by the top of the room. Thus, unlike the traditional plastered ceiling, which can be moldy from the absorption of steam, plastic structures will not deteriorate.
- Plastic constructions are easy to clean using any household cleaners or a damp / dry cloth,
- Easy to install. Plastic ceilings are easy to install with a limited number of tools. A competent worker can install a plastic ceiling in the kitchen for several hours only with a hand saw, screw drill or staple and glue gun. It can be installed on top of an existing plastered ceiling,
- Plastic panels can be installed with ceiling lights, and also serve as a way to hide wiring. Recessed luminaires, also known as spot lights, are some of the most popular innovations in bathrooms and kitchens, but require additional wires and holes for drilling. They will hide various damages on the already existing topcoat caused by the installation of ceiling lighting, so it’s not even necessary to remove the previous coating,
- Plastic ceilings in the kitchen can be installed on a wooden or metal frame,

- Such a ceiling can be used as a suspended ceiling (hide some elements of the decoration of the room).
Disadvantages of ceiling panels
Like any product has its positive and negative sides. A person chooses what is best for him. A very important role is played by the quality of the materials. Let's consider in more detail what are the disadvantages when choosing plastic strips for the ceiling:
- Due to their construction and material, heat can damage the top. This means that lighting must be energy efficient and not produce more heat than required. LED bulbs, etc. must be installed,
- Due to the fact that plastic parts are installed, connecting lines between each board may be visible,
- When plastic ceiling strips are still new and are being installed, static charge can build up on the surface of the boards. This charge is not enough to harm, but enough to attract dust and dirt. It is easy to clean, but it may take a day or two to dissipate the static charge,
- Once the plastic ceiling is installed, you cannot change its color, if you want to change the shade, you will need to install a new cladding.
Plastic ceiling: installation features
Plastic boards are a type of suspended ceiling. Suitable for this material on a metal bar, which is assembled from profiles. If desired, the frame can be made of solid wood.

Before installation, calculate the amount of materials needed. To do this, you need to calculate the surface area of the ceiling.
How to calculate the number of ceiling panels for the kitchen
Repair is definitely not an easy period for every person. For everything to work out perfectly the first time, you need to carefully measure the entire surface on which the ceiling panel will be installed.
p, blockquote 15,0,0,0,0 ->
It all starts with calculating the area of your room. First determine if your room is even. If it resembles an even rectangle, then simply multiply its width by length. If the room is of an unusual shape, you need to divide the ceiling into several simple figures, calculate their area and put it together.
p, blockquote 16,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 17,0,0,0,0 - ->
For example, in this case, the space has a diagonal wall. To calculate the area:
- we decompose it into a rectangle with dimensions of 2 x 4 m, and a right triangle with legs 1 m and 2 m,
- the area of the rectangle is 2 * 4 = 8 m 2,
- the area of a right-angled triangle is half the product of the legs: 0.5 * (1 * 2) = 1 m 2,
- add: 8 + 1 = 9 m 2 - this is the area of our room (and, accordingly, the ceiling).
The sequence of installation of plastic plates
- Start by designing the starter profile. Make sure it is level. Use level.
- Attach the cross-shaped elements. To fix, use special hooks.
- Attach one strip to the drawer. Use self-tapping screws for this.
- Install the remaining panels in the same way.
Types of plastic for ceiling decoration
What are plastic plates:
- Slatted panels. Their thickness ranges from 5 to 10 millimeters and a width of 10 to 40 centimeters. Length ranges from 2.5 to 6 meters. Rack panels are cheaper than most
- Tiled panels. They have a square shape with a side of 30-100 centimeters. A mounting flange is located around the perimeter of the tile, through which the panel is mounted,
- Sheet strips. The width, as a rule, is 0.8-2 meters. The length of the leaves ranges from 1.5 to 4 meters. At the junction of the strips installed profiles.
To create a comfortable and attractive look of the room, it is important to determine the color range of the plastic panels.

How to prepare the surface for installation
Before starting the installation, you need to take care of installing the wiring and all devices. Then you need to pre-prepare the surface. It is recommended to clean the ceiling of dust and eliminate unevenness with plaster. Take care to further protect the surface from fungus. Treat the surface with special mixtures that disinfect and prevent the emergence and development of microorganisms.

Advantages of PVC panels in the kitchen
Firstly, this finish is incredibly easy to clean. For its cleaning, special substances will not be required - pollution and soot settling on the kitchen ceiling are easily cleaned. Restrictions on the choice of cleaning products exist only for glossy and mirror surfaces - you can not use abrasives here.
Secondly, PVC panels will survive even the most severe flooding - and dry themselves without damage, without requiring any intervention from you. It will be necessary to remove the ceiling from plastic only if the amount of water that has got into your apartment is very large. Thanks to the moisture resistance of the material, it is most often used for facing the ceiling in the bathroom and on the balcony. Well, in the kitchen, finishing with plastic panels is especially relevant if you are often flooded from above.
Thirdly, the ceiling panels in the kitchen help hide communications (wires and pipes).
Fourth, a significant advantage of this type of suspended ceiling is that they do not require a perfectly even ceiling and hide even its significant defects.
It is worth noting such advantages of PVC ceilings as:
- Stability and shape stability even with sharp temperature changes,
- Possibility of trouble-free installation attractive spotlights anywhere on the cover
- Repair and installation of plastic ceilings may well be done independently. To do this, the frame is assembled, and plastic panels are attached to it from above. It’s not necessary to create a perfectly even surface of the base,
- This finish allows for additional sound insulation due to the inclusion of appropriate materials in the frame,
- Plastic ceilings are environmentally friendly and odorless, which compares favorably with stretch structures,
- Affordable price.
Of the disadvantages of PVC ceilings, it can only be noted that the design refers to the hinged, which means it will slightly reduce the overall height of the ceiling.
Choose a design
Finishing with plastic panels is also a lot of different design solutions.Such a ceiling can become mirrored or translucent, imitating ceramics, bamboo, metal or marble, “wood-like” or even “leather-like”.
Of course, when choosing the texture and color, the general stylistic decision of the room is crucial, however, it is not recommended to make a dark plastic ceiling. Traditionally used pastel colors, shades of blue and beige. By the way, light colors will allow you to visually expand the space.
White plastic will be very similar to a more noble white wooden lining and will fit into the interior of any style and color.
Frosted panels will look better in the kitchen, and gloss is more appropriate in the bathroom.
What to look for in the store
When you have decided on the design, you need to move on to the issue of procurement of material. It is important that you purchase high-quality plastic panels, and for this you need to consider the following recommendations:
- Plastic sheets and their edges must be even - even the smallest roughness in the joint area will lead to the fact that the integrity of the suspension structure is violated,
- Each of the PVC panels should be uniformly painted, without interspersing. If the design provides for color transitions within the same canvas, then it should be uniform and smooth,
- Panels should also not be too thin and soft.
- To check the quality of the plastic, squeeze the panel with two fingers and bend its corner several times - a high-quality panel should not crack, much less break, only a barely noticeable deformation is permissible.
PVC ceiling panels are lighter and more fragile than wall ones, and therefore transportation and installation should be done with great care.
We calculate the consumption of materials: panels, skirting boards, profiles and fasteners
The thickness of PVC panels is most often 5–10 mm, width is 250–500 mm, and length varies from 2.7 m (standard) to 3 m. Ceiling skirtings have a three-meter length.
To calculate plastic panels, first determine the area of the ceiling, and then divide this number by the area of one panel (indicated on the package). Add 15% of the margin to the resulting figure and round this data up.
Along the perimeter of the kitchen, it is necessary to install guide profiles UD (hard), and the supporting transverse slats of the frame should be light, that is, CD.
Count the number of profiles for the manufacture of crates. To do this, draw a scale diagram of your ceiling on a sheet in a cage. Now designate the profiles that will be installed across the room parallel to each other. The distance between them should be about 60 cm. Calculate how many profiles will be required, taking into account those that will be installed around the perimeter of the kitchen. Also count the required number of dowels (for attaching profiles) and screws (for attaching panels) at the rate of: 1 dowel per 50 cm of profile and 1 screw on 50 cm of the length of the PVC panel. The lathing can be made of wooden bars, then instead of self-tapping screws, 6 mm staples fit. But keep in mind that a wooden frame will not last as long as a metal one.
To calculate the required number and length of skirting boards, divide the perimeter of the ceiling by 3 (since the length of the skirting board is 3 meters), and then round this figure up to a multiple of three.
What is required for work - necessary tools and accessories
We will need the actual PVC panels of standard dimensions (5-8 mm thickness, 6 meters length, 25 cm width) and the selected design. Also required:
- Wireframe profiles,
- PVC baguette
- Type L profile,
- Mounting angle
- Wooden slats with a cross section of about 40x20 or 50x25 mm or metal profiles for fastening GK-systems,
- P-type metal fasteners, which are used in plasterboard ceilings.
As for the tool and fasteners, the repair requires the following:
- Screws, dowels made of plastic,
- Durable metal staples and stapler,
- Screwdriver / drill,
- Pliers,
- Hammer,
- Scissors for metal or a hacksaw for wood (depending on what material is used to create the frame),
- Level,
- Roulette,
- Knife,
- Elbow,
- Pencil / marker.
Do not forget that plastic paneling is done in the kitchen, that is, in a place with high humidity. So that you do not have to make repairs here often, additionally treat the wooden crate with a protective solution that increases the resistance of wood to moisture. If this is not done, then very soon PVC will “lead”.
Plastic ceiling in the kitchen: a variety of design options
Plastic panels are divided into matte and glossy. They can be plain, reminiscent of marble or have a varied print. The most affordable financially are white plain matte panels. Plain but shiny coatings are a little more expensive. A special composition is used for them, which provides a glossy shine.
Ceilings with a pattern look very beautiful. There are two options: either buy a ready-made one, the image on which is made by applying a special film, or order an individual print — it will be done using special equipment. It is clear that in the second case, the cost will be higher than in the first.
Plastic ceiling panels with a picture
Mirrored plastic panels are becoming increasingly popular. Previously, they could be found in shops, shopping centers and other public places, but today they have found application in the design of residential premises. Such panels are created by applying a special film to the base. Such a coating significantly increases the space, but for the kitchen it has some disadvantages, the main of which is the visibility of spots and condensation.

Designers advise using acrylic-coated plastic panels for rooms with high humidity (including the kitchen). They also have good reflectivity, but not as easily soiled as with a mirror film.

Note that plastic panels are so easy to install that a novice can cope with the installation, especially since later we will tell you how to calculate the amount of necessary material, what tools you need to prepare to independently make a ceiling from plastic panels in the kitchen, and also offer step-by-step instructions for performing work from professionals.
How to choose ceiling panels for the kitchen in the store: advice from experienced repairmen
- The first thing you need to decide on the design. That is, decide for yourself what color you want the ceiling to be (even if you are a fan of custom solutions, it is better to abandon the dark plastic ceiling). A win-win option - white ceiling panels, they can be safely combined with any kitchen design.
- Be sure to make sure that your chosen PVC panels are even. There should be no roughness or other roughness in the joint area. Their presence can lead to the fact that the entire suspension structure will suffer.
- Pay attention to the uniformity of staining.
- Panels should not be excessively soft or thin.
Tip: Checking the quality of purchased plastic is very simple. It is necessary to squeeze the ceiling panel with two fingers with force and then try to bend the corner. A high-quality panel should withstand such mechanical stress without any problems. If there are signs of deformation or cracks, then it is better to refuse to buy PVC panels from this manufacturer.
How to calculate material
Material calculation is very important. In this regard, we must act on the principle of "measure seven times, cut one." If you skip this item or treat it inattentively, the material may or may not be enough, and then finding the missing one can be very difficult, and buying in a smaller quantity will be more expensive than the invoice, or it will remain, which means there will be financial losses again.
The amount of panel masonry is determined based on the surface area. To do this, multiply the width by the length + for the stock we get about 10-15% of the obtained footage.
A profile is a bit more complicated. In order to calculate the required amount, it is necessary to draw a plan of the ceiling and calculate how much the length of all the lines goes along the perimeter and parallel to one of the sides at a distance of 50-60 cm from each other. A more rigid profile should be located around the perimeter of the ceiling, which will serve as the basis, while the transverse planks can be made of more pliable material.
Do not forget to calculate the number of fasteners. For every half meter of the profile there is one dowel. Self-tapping screws with wide caps are also bought at the rate of: one per half meter of the panel length. It is better to buy them with a margin.
Do not forget about the baseboard. Without it, the ceiling design in the kitchen made of plastic panels will look unfinished. To find out how many meters of ceiling skirting is required for the kitchen, you need to divide the perimeter of the ceiling by 3, and then increase the resulting number to one that is a multiple of three.
Wireframe method
To carry out the installation of ceiling panels, some preliminary work must be done. First, the frame is attached around the perimeter, then the transverse slats are made, the panels are cut. The first is attached to the side fillets and pressed until it gets into a hole specially made for it.
Then it is fixed by a side shelf. The following panels are also attached.
The frame can be made of wood, plastic or metal. It is used for rooms with high humidity, as well as when tapping lamps is provided.
Before starting work, remove the extra layer of plaster, then a frame is made under the panel.
To mask defects, you must first draw a line using the building level.
The location of the frame parts is marked with a marker.
Tip: even if the choice fell on wooden battens, the basis around the perimeter is best done from a UD metal profile. So it will be more reliable.
When calculating the height of the frame, you should consider whether wiring or other communications will be located in the box.
Frameless Method
With this method, the installation of ceiling panels in the kitchen is faster, but it is possible only if the surface to which the panels will be attached is strong enough and does not have obvious defects.
For fasteners, glue or liquid nails are used, which are applied using a notched trowel, which is also used for working with tiles. Before starting work, the surface must be dried and degreased.
The advantages of the frameless method are simplicity and significant financial savings, however, it should be borne in mind that the design of the ceiling in the kitchen from plastic panels in this case will be as simplified as possible. It will not work to arrange lamps and other elements that allow you to create an individual atmosphere.
Which of the proposed options for ceiling coverage to choose is up to you. If home renovation is carried out with love, it simply cannot fail.
Preparatory work
Before attaching plastic panels to the kitchen ceiling, it is necessary to prepare the base. Before fixing the frame, putty and plaster are knocked down from the main ceiling (not completely, but only peeling fragments).
Then they begin to create a frame for plastic panels. To do this, you need:
- Mark the location of the bottom of the frame - a tubular water level is used for this.
- If you use a metal frame, then first UD profiles are screwed to the wall. Between the bottom mark of the frame and the ceiling (base) should be at least 25 mm.
- After installing UD profiles, the main ones are mounted - from metal or wood. They are mounted directly to the ceiling using U-shaped metal mounts. Between the fasteners, a distance of less than 70 cm is necessarily maintained. The smaller the set step, the more reliable and stiffer the entire structure will be. Self-tapping screws are used for fastening wooden beams, and metal profiles are attached using fleas.
Plastic mount
To begin with, PVC sheets are cut - so that their length is less than the distance between the walls (in length) by 5 mm.
Work must begin from the window. Fixing strips need to be fixed to the installed profiles, while the last fixing bar is mounted on the wall opposite the window and in the last turn.
Then we insert baseboards into the grooves of the installed mounting plates, which were previously cut to the desired length.
The first panel slides into the recess between the baseboard and the mounting plate, is aligned and fastened with screws with a wide hat. Next, each next panel is mounted in the groove of the previous panel and is also screwed to the frame with screws.
Heating pipes can pass through the ceiling. To get around them, holes of the desired diameter are cut out in plastic panels. And do not forget that near the pipes, the PVC finish can warp.
The last piece of PVC before mounting is necessarily cut along the side of the mounting edge to the desired width and inserted into the recess between the bar and the profile, and then into the groove of the penultimate panel.
Now it remains only to install the last baseboard and the ceiling repair in the kitchen using plastic panels can be considered completed.
